Alcohazard animation project helps parents and children talk about alcohol

TV and Film students at Wiltshire College campuses in Trowbridge and Chippenham have been using their creative skills to support Wiltshire Council’s work with parents.

The Council commissioned Creative Wiltshire to produce a number of animations about the way parents and their sons or daughters communicate about alcohol. The short pieces will be used as talking points in parenting sessions across the county.

The creative brief was delivered in a series of intensive workshops at the two college sites, involving more than 30 students and supported by award winning professional animators from BiggerHouse films: Tom Stubbs and Joff Winterhart

One of the students involved was Niki Vossler, 20, from Melksham. “I think that the project will have a lasting impact and that the work we’ve done will help people affected,” she said.

Trowbridge lecturer in TV and Film Simon Weintroub said: "Having a genuine brief from a client is always a fantastic starting point for a project, as it always enthuses the students and adds credibility to both the course and the processes we try to install and encourage.

“Providing the learners with what can be seen as genuine 'work experience' always motivates them and bring out that extra professionalism that criteria requires. Having Tom and Joff on board was wonderful, as they brought a really exciting energy to the project which the learners were able to feed off. Having the opportunity to engage with and learn from industry professionals always provides the learners with an exciting boost, and at this time of year certainly, that's completely invaluable".

It’s the second time Wiltshire College students have worked with Creative Wiltshire on a Council project to convey messages about alcohol; for an earlier phase of the Alcohazard project, students produced a series of animations aimed at under-age drinkers. This grew out of a particular concern about the number of young people in Salisbury being hospitalised due to alcohol consumption. The campaign was circulated to all Wiltshire schools and won national acclaim.

Alochazard is produced by Richard White for Creative Wiltshire. The latest batch of films will be released later in the year, view the earlier films here: Alcohazard
